Education Code section 221.5(f), went into effect approximately five years ago. This section reinforced existing law applicable to gender non-conforming students at school and ignited a state wide conversation about districts’ obligation to provide a safe and secure learning environment for all students, including key issues related to names and pronouns, mandatory records, privacy concerns, accessibility to single-sex facilities, dress codes, discipline, bullying, harassment and discrimination, and participation in physical education and extra-curricular athletics. This presentation will review practices that have been used to address these issues and discuss guidelines for administrators to fully comply with the letter and spirit of the law.
