Small and mid-size school districts, defined as having an Average Daily Attendance under 5,000 students, have unique issues when it comes to offering a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to their students. Finding appropriate and qualified staff is often difficult, particularly for rural and/or isolated districts. Programmatic options often are limited. Additionally, a single due process complaint can put a yearly budget into a tailspin. This presentation will provide small and mid-size school districts with legal and practical advice on how to solve such issues. Ms. Nix will have Mindy Fattig, Director of the Humboldt-Del Norte SELPA, co-present to help address the practical issues associated with legal compliance with special education laws. Ms. Fattig serves 32 small and mid-size local educational agencies in a rural two-county area. The workshop will be delivered through a Power Point lecture with accompanying materials.
