Support for General Education Students with Behavior Concerns: CARE

This presentation will focus on a Social Emotional Intervention; General Education CARE Class (Comprehensive Assessment, Research and Evaluation). This Tier III intervention is a 12 week program where students leave their home site and attend CARE Class. The class serves students with behaviors that are interfering with their access to the general education setting. It includes a wrap-around service, model classrooms for push in, mental health services, mindfulness for self-regulation and parenting classes. The purpose of this model is to address the needs of the student and family before any special education testing. We are in our second year of implementation and the success has been astounding. Students that would normally have been tested and maybe designated for special education for emotional disturbance are successfully returning to their home sites and managing in the general education setting. The presentation would include information on why this is so important, the data around the success and challenges of the program, referral process, funding and staffing, schedules, curriculum, parent commitment, content of parent classes and support as students transition back to their home schools.
