Do We Need a 1:1 Para-Education: Yes, No, Maybe? An Administrator’s Dilemma

With over sixty percent of special needs students now spending 80% or more of their time in general education classes, requests for 1:1 Para-educators will likely increase. The Student Inventory for Behavior Support (SIBS) is designed to help administrators decide whether a student requires the intense support of a 1:1 Para-educator, and if not, what alternative interventions may be implemented in the classroom. The SIBS online system simplifies this decision making process by producing a data profile of student behavior based on classroom observations.

Participants will learn how SIBS converts classroom observations into a data profile of a student; learn from case illustrations how SIBS graphics yield data to understand the student’s ability to sustain work effort, and how much do non-engaged behaviors stop productivity; learn that the data profile from SIBS will give interventions based on a continuum of mild to intense for use in IEPs, 504 and RtI plans; and will receive a sample copy of an actual case with Comprehensive Narrative Report and supporting graphics to see the usefulness of the information for meetings with parents and teachers.
