Enhancing Local Education Agency’s Capacity to Effectively Support and Train Para-Educators

Effective utilization and training of para-educators are commonly reported challenges by
teachers and administrators. The presenter will highlight the ethical and liability issues
associated with the use of inadequately trained ns supervised para-educators. The session
will provide information with regards to developing policies to guide teachers and
administrators. Additionally, the presenter will share research based para-educator
supervision related functions and interactive tools that the licensed professionals in
schools can use, under the guidance of the school/district leaders, to direct, support, and monitor the work of the para-educators. Resources and tools with regards to in-service and
on-the job training of para-educators will also be shared. The presenter will also discuss
the critical role of the school and district leaders’ in providing supports for collaborative
working relationships among team members
