Educating children in the classroom takes a whole new approach. At Sycamore Elementary School, we continuously learn to be trauma-informed educators in order to effectively nurture, protect, enrich, educate, and heal children. We are successful in implementing a positive discipline system that includes student ownership in their choices of behavior. We developed a successful sensory intervention in a beautiful, safe, and functional calm-room to instruct students how to self-regulate and apply these skills. Students in need of self-regulation instruction receive 10-15 minutes, one to three times a day of sensory regulation routines, and then a reflection opportunity to practice the use of the strategies when they experience emotions in their “downstairs” brain. We will share our story and our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support.
