The Best Kept Secret in Education: Alternative Education

Alternative education has historically been labeled as “the school to which the bad students are sent.” Due to recent legislation and the implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to modify behaviors, the “alternative school” looks different in its purpose and population. Many school districts have converted their alternative schools into Independent Study programs, essentially eliminating the educational vehicle needed for those students who do not fit into the educational mainstream path. Alternative education students need to be seen, heard, and taught just like students in the comprehensive schools. By only offering Independent Study, other alternative educational vehicles are eliminated. Why the traditional alternative education model is the best kept secret is answered. At the end of this presentation, participants will: identify key issues at sites/districts that will result in student success when an action plan is developed and implemented with fidelity; define site/district/community needs and backwards design through a collaborative process and develop systems that will result in student success (academic, social, emotional); describe prior/current site/district challenges, a list of real and perceived problems must be identified, then strategically and realistically develop an action plan to resolve over a period of time (generally years); and discover the power of education when all stakeholders are united by the same vision, that each student will be seen, heard, and taught to reach their greatest potential.
